Wen-Hsing Chiang, Ph.D.
Associate Engineer I
Wen-Hsing Chiang |
Dr. Chiang has 23 years of professional experience in hydrogeologic engineering, which includes hydrology, groundwater modeling, statistical analysis, numerical computer modeling, and software development. Dr. Chiang received a B. S. in Civil Engineering from. National Central University, Taiwan in 1983, and an M.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Stuttgart, Germany in 1989 and a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the University of Kassel, Germany in 1998. His experience includes work as a Professor at the University of the Free State, South Africa where he authored and published the text book "3D Groundwater Modeling with PMWIN", which included the user interface Processing Modflow and computer codes for groundwater flow and contaminant transport simulation. Dr. Chiang had the opportunity to serve as a University Instructor, where he taught "Applied Groundwater Modeling" short courses from 1996 to 2004 at the University of Bremen, Germany.
Dr. Chiang has been involved with the development of groundwater modeling software for pre- and post-processor Processing Modflow, for supporting MODFLOW, MT3DMS, RT3D, PEST, etc., and has applied Processing Modflow on a number of groundwater modeling projects. He has developed groundwater flow and transport models for landfills, mines and regional groundwater resource management. In most of these cases numerical models (e.g. MODFLOW, MODPATH, MT3D/MT3DMS/RT3D, PEST, SUTRA) have been used. Dr. Chiang has developed two-dimensional and three-dimensional Visualization applications, integrating GIS (maps, aerial photos, digital elevation models, shapefiles), construction plans (AutoCAD DXF files), and environmental data (two-dimensional contours/cross-sections or three-dimensional-plumes based on groundwater and soil data).
Dr. Chiang is proficient in major programming languages (C, C++, C#, Visual Basic, FORTRAN, Java), and development environment (Visual Studio, Visio, Visual Source Safe, Wise Installation System). He is also proficient in the application of open-source libraries, which are essential for developing scientific applications, including Qt, Microsoft Foundation Class (MFC), Visualization Toolkit (vtk). Geostatistical Library (GSLIB), Geospatial Abstraction Library (GDAL), Cartography projection library (GCTPC), OpenGL, etc. Dr. Chiang is very familiar with relational databases SQL-Server, Access and MySQL and knowledgeable in web-technology such as HTML, XHTML, XML, SOAP, XMLRPC, PHP, Macromedia Flash, Dreamweaver, FrontPage, IIS.
